Madurai’s own Pulikulam cattle breed which provides us those raging bulls that test the taming skills of bull fighters during the ancient sport of jallikattu held annually has now been approved and registered as an indigenous breed. The Breed Registration Committee (BRC) of National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) coming under Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) has approved the registration. KOCHI: Moves are afoot to get the Kasaragod dwarf cattle included in the list of native cattle breed of Kerala by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), Karnal, Faridabad . The Vechur Conservation Trust , which was active in efforts to revive Vechur cows from the brink of extinction, is planning to launch the initiative and will rope in Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) and the state government for the purpose. "I have done some studies on tracing and documenting the characteristics of the Kasaragod dwarf cattle when I was working at the Animal Breeding and Genetics Department of the Kerala Agricultural University in the late 1990s. The Punganur breed's milk has a high fat content and is rich in medicinal properties. While cow milk normally has a fat content of 3 to 3.5 per cent, the Punganur breed's milk contains 8 per cent. [ 1 ] The Punganur is found in Chittoor district situated in the south-eastern tip of the Deccan Plateau with an average rainfall of 700 mm. It is the worlds shortest, humped cattle. Animals are white and light grey in colour with a broad forehead and short horns. Its average height is 70-90 cms and its weight is 115-200 kg. Umblachery Also Known By: Jathi madu, Mottai madu, Southern Tanjore, Therkuthi madu The Umblachery is found in the region of Thanjanvur, Tamil Nadu in India . It is a draft breed of the zebu type, similar to Kangayam but smaller. They are grey with white points and back-lines. Calves are red or brown with white markings. The breed is rare.
